Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind is NDA’s nominee for President


NEW DELHI:  The BJP on Monday announced the name of Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the party's official nominee for the post of the President of India.

A Dalit leader from Uttar Pradesh, Kovind was spokesperson of the BJP before the party won a majority in the Lok Sabha and appointed him governor of Bihar.

Announcing his candidature, BJP president Amit Shah said, 'the BJP has always been a party that stood for the most backward and disadvantaged groups in the country. I am proud to announce Ramnathji's name as President.'

With this announcement, the field is now open for the opposition to either contest the BJP's choice or support Kovind's candidature.

No decision has yet been taken on the Vice President nominee, Shah added.

Kovind, born on October 1, 1945, is currently the Governor of Bihar.

Kovind, was Central Government Advocate in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and Central Government Standing Counsel in Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993. He became Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 1978.

Kovind is also a two time Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh. He was elected in April 1994 from Uttar Pradesh and served for two consecutive terms for 12 years till March, 2006. He has been a champion of issues relating to Dalits and Backward castes. He has served in the following committees:

Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes.

Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs.

Parliamentary Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.

Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice.

Chairman of Rajya Sabha House Committee.
