To Survive Cancer Surround Yourself with Support

As the world marked World Cancer Day on 4 th February 2018, to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment, it is imperative to point out that new cancer cases are on the rise in India. Around 2.5 million people are living with Cancer in India, adding almost 7 lakh new cancer patients every year. This number is expected to reach 17 lakh new cancer cases every year by 2020, according to a projection by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). One in every eight men and one in every nine women have the possibility to develop cancer during their lifetime.

A strong support system is vital to ensure that you are able to live life to the full, even while you are fighting the disease. You do not need to go through cancer alone. You should develop a support system made up of not only your family and friends but also volunteers, members of nonprofit or faith-based organizations or cancer program staff. They can help you keep track of your healthcare records and appointments, provide you with the information and services that you need. They would also help with day to day needs and could help with insurance and financial matters. Keep a list, mental or written, of big things and little things that you could use some help with so you are ready when the occasion arises.A good support system can help reduce stress as it will allow you to focus on your healing process.

It is also imperative that you have a good critical illness cover that will help make the hospitalisation process easier on you financially. Make sure that your insurance provider has a large hospital network coverage, if possible a worldwide one as specific cancer treatments may need you to travel overseas. As a thumb rule, ensure that you take protection of around 10 times your annual income as your Sum Insured for critical illness. Also check for various claim payout options such as lump sum payout upon diagnosis or a staggered payout that will give you monthly installments helping you cover your expenses while you courageously fight the disease.
