Sensex breaches 32K

CHENNAI:  The benchmark Sensex breached the 32,000 mark for the first time and the NSE Nifty hit a new peak of 9,884 due to a sharp drop in retail inflation and dovish comments by the US Fed Chair, Janet Yellen, in her testimony before the US Congress.

Retail inflation has stoked hopes that a policy rate cut may be on the anvil. Also positive global cues after US Federal Reserve chief indicated a gradual approach to raising US interest rates made investors here go in for fresh bets.

At 10.20 a.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 224.55 points or 0.71 per cent at 32,029.37 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 62.4 points or 0.64 per cent at 9,878.50.

Among BSE sectoral indices, realty index was the star-performer and was up 1.5 per cent, followed by FMCG 1.24 per cent, capital goods 1.14 per cent and power 0.87 per cent.

Top five Sensex gainers were ITC (+1.84%), ICICI Bank (+1.45%), L&T (+1.27%), Axis Bank (+1.24%) and Bharti Airtel (+1.07%), while the major losers were ONGC (-1.01%), Tata Motors (-0.29%), M&M (-0.12%) and Bajaj Auto (-0.11%).
